In a recent interview with the European Research Group of Support for Ukrainian Membership (ERGOSUM), Professor László Bruszt, Director of the CEU Democracy Institute, discussed the transformative potential of the European Union’s (EU) enlargement process, particularly concerning Ukraine’s integration.

Professor Bruszt emphasized that the outcome of the current enlargement process will significantly reshape the EU’s role on the global stage. He stated, “The outcome of this enlargement process will dramatically transform the role of the EU. Everyone knows that longer-term security and geopolitical standing of the EU depend on how it integrates Ukraine. If it integrates well, the EU will be stronger. EU will be more competitive.”

Addressing the complexities of integrating a nation like Ukraine, Bruszt highlighted both challenges and opportunities. He noted that successful integration requires not only economic and political reforms within Ukraine but also a strategic and supportive approach from existing EU member states. This process, while demanding, offers the EU a chance to enhance its competitiveness and geopolitical influence.

Bruszt underscored the strategic importance of Ukraine’s integration for the EU’s future. He suggested that a well-executed enlargement could lead to a more robust and competitive European Union, better positioned to navigate global challenges and assert its role in international affairs.
