In an op-ed in the Financial Times titled “Ukraine’s military holds lessons for its postwar future”, Tymofiy Milovanov discusses how the practices that helped Ukraine endure the war can guide the country’s postwar reconstruction and help build a stronger, freer, and more prosperous Ukraine.
First, he argues, “we need to spread a start-up culture throughout the government and civilian economy,” with government departments and state-owned businesses creating “small and agile teams with the authority to bypass bureaucracy and deliver quick but effective fixes to problems.”
Second, the government must adopt the military’s “relentless focus on results” and combine it with accountability and transparency.
Third, he calls for increasing funding on teaching maths, science and engineering as well as on research infrastructure.
“In 2022 the Ukrainian people discovered within themselves the capacity for greatness and astonished the world. We can do it again.”
